Wellington Night Shelter

Local Architecture Awards - Wellington Architecture Award Winners 2008

Category : Public Architecture
NZIA Practice: Perry Architects

Citation : A good urban response that shows how architecture can repair city fabric and enhance people’s lives. The building provides privacy and personal space in a challenging communal environment. A well articulated street edge incorporates the building and the public space of the street. The small structure at the entrance to the site serves both as a shelter and a sign for the building. This is a public amenity that provides an architectural experience to those that can least afford it.

Newtown Union Health Services

2001, 2008

NUHS  is a low cost medical centre in Newtown Wellngton. The service had operated for some years in an adajent small building that they had outgrown, that existing building proved to be not economical to extend.

The architect suggested building a new building on poles on the adjacent church owned land , which the church generously agreed to .The building design needed to use only one parkpark. The building was total constructed of sandwich panels which proved a very ecomonical sytem to achieve the heatlth servosces requiremnets. The system also  allows for easy removal of the structure in the future shold the need arise.  The service continues to expand and the facility was added to using the same construction  method in 2008
