Cubana Apartments

2010 NZIA Regional Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing Award

Citation: Cubana stands apart from other multi-residential projects as it seeks to engage directly with Cuba Street, drawing on the rich palette of materials and ‘architectural moves’ the street offers. Proportionally appropriate, the plan has been teased out of it’s narrow site and the structure sits back from the street in a comfortable relationship with existing building lines. Spaces are quirky and non-conformist and the architect has provided outdoor living areas with clever levels of privacy. It is graffiti architecture – grungy and streetwise – and makes no apologies for this

2010 Resene Colour Award

Citation: Materials and colour have been skilfully translated from Cuba Street into an apartment complex that clearly references it’s gritty urban context

Quest Hotel Napier

2009 NZIA Regional Commercial Architecture Award

Merit Award, Annual Art Deco Awards 2009 (for the revitalisation of a Napier landmark)

Citation: This recently opened hotel successfully melds a new four-storey structure and sensitive retrofit of an existing two-storey (circa 1919) commercial building on one of Napier’s main streets. Commendably, the architects have retained the existing building and set it off with a restrained colour scheme that reflects the style and grandeur of the period. The interior planning skilfully reworks existing and new floor levels into a plan centred around the lift and stair. Contemporary design elements create the ambience of a boutique hotel.

Local Architecture Awards - Wellington Architecture Award Winners 2008

2008 Wellington Civic Trust Recognition Certificate for a Heritage Project

Category : Public Architecture
NZIA Practice: Perry Architects

Citation: This relatively large hotel and apartment complex maintains its heritage setting while confidently asserting its contemporary identity. Skilful street-front insertions, housing boutique retailers, sit happily with old buildings and are complemented by a pair of well-resolved and highly modulated towers that sit modestly back from the street edge. This is a generous project that provides public facilities and connections, and revitalises and enhances its urban setting.

Wellington Night Shelter

Local Architecture Awards - Wellington Architecture Award Winners 2008

Category : Public Architecture
NZIA Practice: Perry Architects

Citation : A good urban response that shows how architecture can repair city fabric and enhance people’s lives. The building provides privacy and personal space in a challenging communal environment. A well articulated street edge incorporates the building and the public space of the street. The small structure at the entrance to the site serves both as a shelter and a sign for the building. This is a public amenity that provides an architectural experience to those that can least afford it.
